Is There Any Healthy Alternative To Baby Formula?
Over the years, countless studies have shown that when it comes to infant nutrition, breast milk is best. This fact remains true, as there is simply no infant formula product on the market that can match the superior nutrition of mother's milk. In fact, some infant formulas actually contain ingredients that can be harmful to your baby.
In many hospitals across the country, new mothers are given complimentary gift baskets during their stay that often contains free samples of infant formula, supplied by the formula companies. This is a practice health authorities see as a clever marketing trick since it implies that the hospital's healthcare providers, in giving new mothers this "gift", endorse the use of formula.
Infants are designed to drink their mother's milk. They are not meant to have cow's milk. Only breast milk contains the nutrients a healthy baby needs, including 160 fatty acids that are not found in baby formula.
Some breastfeeding advocates may criticized me, claiming that by providing a more healthy alternative to commercial formulas, I'm discouraging breastfeeding. Make no mistake: the best food for baby is breastmilk from a healthymother. However, many situations call out for a good substitute: adopted and orphaned babies, babies born to mothers with serious health problems, and babies whose mothers do not have enough milk (a situation that does happen occasionally) deserve to receive something better than commercial formula.
Have you ever looked at the ingredients label on a container of baby formula? Oftentimes, there are things in there that we, as adults, shouldn't even be eating -- hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and cow's milk, just to name a few. These are ingredients that promote chronic disease, and yet we are feeding them to our babies, who have no say in the matter.
Of particular concern in formula is the ingredient manganese, a neurotoxic chemical found in much higher concentrations in baby formula, particularly soy-based formulas. Elevated manganese levels have been linked to behavioral problems, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) later in life. Babies are not able to absorb and excrete excess manganese during the first year of life, according to the EWG.
If you have read my birth story, you know I could not breastfeed my son for the first two weeks after birth. I supplement with homemade rice milk, and goat milk. These are very healthy choices, babies loves it and is very easy to make. You can supplement your baby with these milks as an alternative, to formula. While you work on increasing your milk supply or for those that are not able to breastfeed their babies full time.
As I had shared with you before through my writings, the father of my son is an professional chef that specializes in health foods, having deep knowledge about nutrition and preventive health care.
When we faced the dilemma of me, been unable to breastfeed our son, right after birth he decided to come up with an alternative solution. He decided to make his own home made "milk formula" to give to our son, while I was recovering. I’m very opposed to formula, but he is even more opposed to feeding children cow’s milk. And we all know that formula is nothing but cow’s milk powder with additional ingredients added to the mix. Soy formulas can be even worst to babies’ health and I will not recommend to be given to babies.
Please read the ingredients in the formula’s labels, high corn syrup, corn syrup, hydrogenated oils as palm, corn, soy oil, modified corn starch, and “others” many additions to this mix, that are not healthy ingredients that babies needs.
I personally believe that formula is a very unhealthy choice to give to our babies. Not trying to be judgmental here with my opinion, just expressing my sincere opinion, and been honest with you. I am pretty much against formula feeding and the companies that market it.
Many of you have the same concerns about formula and many of you gave it to your babies NOT because you want to but because "the doctor" ordered or you don't know what else to do. I receive countless of emails and phone calls from mothers in distress because they find themselves in a situation that requires to supplement the baby, while you try to increase your milk supply.
I always share with all of these concerned mothers my story and what I did. You asked me if I could write an article about his subject and share my knowledge with you. This article is dedicated to all of those beautiful Moms that needs to supplement their babies with "milk formulas" while working on increasing their milk supply.
If you want to supplement your baby with something extra, use goat's milk as an alternative.
So far, none of my clients’ babies has had any negative reaction. More of the opposite, they tell me their babies loves it. Many mothers had used these “milk formulas” with their babies with excellent results.
An excellent option is goat’s milk, since it is the most similar to human milk, Goat's milk has been proven in the past to be the closest to breastmilk as a supplement despite what some may say to it's shortcomings. Goat milk is low in iron, folate, and vitamins C and D. Breastmilk is also low in Iron, and Vitamins C and D. Should we tell women not to breastfeed? Goat's milk also does not contain many of the allergens found in cow's milk, that can be harmful to babies. In my personal and professional experience, I have found many mothers that had used goat's milk with their children, as a supplement to breastfeeding. They all have become very healthy adults and were not deficient in anything because of it. They actually did better because they could not tolerate cow's milk.
Now consider to use these formulas, while trying to increase your breast milk supply. Or use them exclusively just for a few weeks, until your milk supply increases. On the other hand, if your baby will be eating some solid foods (in the future after, he reaches 6 months of age) then you can also use these milk formulas in conjunction with solid foods. That will work excellent, or you could do half-and-half and see how it works, however the focus is to try to increase your milk supply.
Can babies drink Goat Milk instead of commercial infant formula?
Yes, goat milk can be used, in fact is a much better alternative than "conventional formula". There are many moms that have found this "alternative to formula" to be a life saver for their babies who were allergic or sensitive to cow dairy formula or soy formula. For your mental peace, you can also see what Dr. Sears' have to say on this subject. You can also see the "goat's milk" recipe he recommends, the only thing I won't agree with is to use corn syrup as an addition to this formula. Brown rice syrup is a healthier alternative for babies, and well... for every one.
Can you just give goat's milk as it is?
No, as I mentioned above Goat milk is low in some essential nutrients, as it is iron, folate, and vitamins B, C and D. Human milk contains more whey, lactose, vitamin C, B12, folic acid, niacin, and certain essential fats (long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids including Omega 3s critical for brain health) than goat milk. That is the reason why adding liquid baby vitamins to it, is essential. A very typical infant baby vitamins more doctors recommend is Polivisol, which can be found in any pharmacy. Also if you prefer a more "holistic choice" you can find some very good alternatives to infant vitamins at your health food store.
Goat Milk vs Cow Milk
• Nutrient content of goat milk is slightly less than cow milk but goat milk is more digestible because the fat molecules are one-fifth the size of those from cow milk -- making it easily tolerated by those with compromised digestive systems.
• Seventy-two percent of the milk used throughout the world is from goats. It is one-third richer than cows milk but more nourishing and easier to digest.
• The flavor of goat milk is comparable to that of cow milk. Goat milk has a milder taste.
• Goat milk has no cream separation because of smaller fat molecules.
• Goat milk contains pre-formed Vitamin A in the milk fat that allows it to be readily available for use by the body.
• Goats milk contains a more highly-evolved cholesterol than cows milk, making it more available for absorption to the brain and body. (Cholesterol is essential to the health of the myelin sheaths "white matter" of the nerves in the brain.)
• Goat milk is closer to human milk and is therefore easily accepted especially by those young or frail.
• Goat milk has an alkaline reaction the same as mother's milk. Cow milk has an acid reaction
• Goat milk does not form mucous (phlegm) and is therefore better tolerated by asthmatics and those with allergies. (homemade raw goat milk formula ideal for asthma)
• Goat milk contains more chlorine, fluorine and silicon than any other domestic livestock. Chlorine and fluorine are natural germicides and fluorine assists in preventing diabetes.
• Goat milk contains 2% curd, which precipitates in the stomach. Cows milk is 10% curd.
• Goats are naturally immune to diseases, such as tuberculosis, and are used in third-world countries to actually cure tuberculosis because of their inherent antibodies.
• Goats milk is tolerated by a compromised /damaged liver because of the smaller fat molecules and it's naturally homogenized.
• Goats milk has the ability to "sweeten" the intestinal tract and assist with constipation.
• Goats milk contains a higher evolved carotene (pro-Vitamin A). Researchers have found this to have cancer preventing properties.

Goat Milk Formula In other Parts of The World
After doing an extensive research, I foud out that in other parts of the world such as Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, there is baby formulas made with goat's milk and without the corn syrup and garbage ingredients baby formula have in the USD. I even contacted these companies to inquiry about how to become a distributor so I could import their product into our country and offer to Mothers here. Their response? We cannot do that, the governamental policies in the USA forviden us for entering our product into your country. Really? Why is that uh? I think the answer is very clear. below are some links of these websites selling their goat milk formula, oh and unfortunately don't bother to try to buy it, they won't sell to the USA customers. Not that they don't want to, they simply can't!
Who wrote this article and did you used Goat's milk formula yourself?
My name is Ana Sola, and I'm the owner of the company that manufactures Sacred Tea For Nursing Mothers here in the USA. I have been also working as a certified lactation consultant for over 14 years now, and a wellness consultant. As a first time mom over 14 years ago, I found myself with the devastating dilemma of not been able to breastfeed my son for the first 2 weeks of his life, having to supplement with goat's milk, since formula was simply not a choice for me. Since I had been studying herbs and plants for many years then, I created a tea blend with some of the best herbs belonging to the galactogoge family that have been used for centuries by wise women and medicine women all over the world to help the body to produce more milk supply. The tea worked wonders, I was able to breastfeed my son for 3 years, and over 7 months exclusively. Then working as a lactation consultant, will share my story with my clients and they will ask me to make the tea for them. It worked as well, people started to tell me I should sell and makel the tea available to everyone, not just my friends or personal clients. That's how Sacred Tea started, and so far, after all these years, we have had tremendous success having helped thousands of breastfeeding mothers all over the world. So the answer is YES, I have used goat's milk to feed my son when I could not breastfeed, I also recommend it to my clients who cannot breastfeed, are using it while working on increasing their milk supply, or their babies have allergic reactions to conventional cow's milk formula and soy milk formula.
So don't let no one trying to convince you that formula is the "only" alternative you have, besides breast milk. Further more, tribal people as the Incas or in areas as the Amazon and south America, where formula is not even an option for some, many women gave their children other “alternatives to milk”. I even found a “recipe” that these women use to feed their children for the first 6 months of their life. The use Slippery elm bark, powder it, and mix it with water. Making a liquid “paste” that is used to feed their babies. Curiously enough, these babies grow healthy and don’t develop allergies, asthma or other “typical” childhood illnesses as American or babies born in “civilized” countries do.
However, please keep in mind that I'm not telling you to don't give formula to your baby, or supplement him with these formulas instead. I am just sharing with you, that I did choose this option for my baby as well as other women do.
On the other side, I can guarantee you that if you share this “natural remedies” with a regular pediatrician or allopathic doctor, they will pretty much, try to convince you, that is not a good idea. That have not been “scientifically proven or tested” they may even say something worse, like is not good for a baby or even can be harmful to him. Non-sense. Unfortunately, Holistic medicine and Allopathic medicine, still to this day, agree on anything related to health care and to this day cannot work together in partnership.
Educate yourself, do some research, follow your heart and you and your baby, will be fine.
Thank you for reading this article, and I hope it was helpful to you.
